Amethyst, Citrine, Ametrine

 

Amethysts and Citrine are both varieties of quartz.

Amethyst

The Amethyst has been a prized gemstone since the day of the Romans. The Romans believed it had the power to prevent intoxication and was associated with Bacchus the Roman god of Wine. Amethysts range in color from light to dark purple, and are mined in Brazil and Zambia.The Amethyst is February Birthstone.

Citrine

The Citrine was believed to give its wearer protection against poison and venom, by many ancient civilizations. The origins of the name come from citron, the French word for lemon, due to its brilliant lemon colors.

Ametrine

When the colors of an amethyst and citrine are combined in one gemstone it is called ametrine.
