Opal Legends

The opal has excited civilizations for thousands of years, and many felt it gave them supernatural powers. The Greeks believed opals gave them the ability to see into the future and protected them from sickness and disease. In Arabic culture opals were believed to be caused by lightning that struck the earth. Opal is October Birthstone.

Opal History

There are three main color classifications, white opal, black opal, and fire opal. Opal are often used as doubled or triplets in Jewelry. In a doublet two thin slivers of opal are bonded together. In a triplet the doublet is covered with a protective coating.

Opal Information

Opals are mined in Brazil, Mexico and Australia. On the Mohs Hardness Scale the opal has a rating 5 to 6.5.
