Peridot bright green color was sought after more than 3,000 years ago by the ancient Egyptians, who though of it as the gem of the sun. Hawaiian traditions say that the volcano goddess Pele wept tears of peridot. Peridot is said to give its wearer protection from evil and healing properties. It's is also said to give its wearer protection against nightmares. Peridot is August Birthstone according to modern beliefs, and is also the traditional sixteenth wedding anniversary gift. Peridot rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

Peridot is widely available and is very affordable. The origin of the word peridot comes from the Arabic word faridat, which translates, to gem. The colors of this gemstone span from pale olive to the brilliant lime green, which are the most desired.

Peridot Information

Today peridot is mined in Arizona in the United States. Other countries that produce peridot are Pakistan, China, and Myanmar (Burma). Peridot is often brought to the surface by volcanic activities, but on very rare occasions by asteroids or meteorites. Peridot has a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
