According to legend there was a man eating lizard named Nian or Nyehn that would sneak into the houses on Chinese New Year. The Chinese discovered that this monster could be frightened off by loud noises, so the custom of lighting of fireworks began. Originally they were nothing more than stalks of bamboo that snapped and crackled in the fire however later on gunpowder was added. Today these fireworks are not only noisy but colorful as well.
