The 12 days of Christmas is one of the many misinterpretations of religious holidays that have become accepted as fact in our modern society. Originally the 12 days of Christmas were the 12 days from Christmas (December 25th) to the Epiphany (January 6th). The epiphany is the day that the three wise men were said to have visited the newborn baby Jesus in the manger and present him with gifts. Along the way to speed acceptance of Christian beliefs the 12 days of Christmas became intertwined with pagan festivals celebrating the change of the New Year. In many places the 12 days of Christmas were used to remove old Christmas decorations and chase away evil spirits. The End of the celebration was often celebrated with a king's cake which is now part of Mardi Gras festivals.

Many people have argued that the popular song '12 days of Christmas' carried hidden Christian messages. This theory is supported by a very small minority trying to promote anti-Christian messages and is not given much consideration by serious historians or theologians. Instead most consider it fun song sung at Christmas parties or by Christmas carolers.

On the first day of Christmas,

On the seventh day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds, Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the eighth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

On the ninth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,

On the tenth day of Christmas,
