Christmas Island

Christmas Island has very little to do with Christmas although according to legend it was discovered on Christmas. Christmas Island is a small island located 1450 miles northwest of Australia and 310 miles south of Jakarta Indonesia. The island is owned and governed by Australia.

The island is extremely interesting to scientists and botanists as it is filed with rare flora and fauna. These species are so valuable that over 65% of the island's 52 square miles have been designated a natural wildlife preserve. The island has about 1500 residents but other than a small phosphate mine has no measurable economy.

The island is a flat topped marine island surrounded by a fringing reef making it extremely difficult to navigate to the island. This reef is thought to be the main reason the island remained undeveloped.
