Fathers Day

The idea of Father's Day was first proposed in 1909 by Mrs. Sonora Dodd, as a way to honor her father William Smart. Mrs. Smart was a civil war veteran who was widowed with six children. When Mr. Dodd became she realized the sacrifices that were made by her father and wanted a way to honor him. On June 19, 1910 Sonora held the first Father's Day celebration in Washington State. She chose the month of June, as it was the month her father was born in. This celebration spread to other towns and cities across the United States. In 1924 Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. In 1956 Congress recognized fathers day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson recognized Father's Day and finally in 1972 President Nixon signed it into law. Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Today Father's Day is celebrated to honor all men who are fathers or father figures, including fathers, step fathers, uncles, and grandfathers.
