Jack-O-Lantern

A Jack O' Lantern is a pumpkin or other gourd that has its top stem removed and insides scooped out. The exterior of the pumpkin is then carved into a face or other shape and illuminated from behind. Traditionally pumpkins were only carved with eyes a nose and a mouth. However as specialty pumpkin carving tools became available jack-o-lanterns became increasingly more elaborate and lifelike and may even be described as artwork. Many communities, towns or civic centers now hold annual pumpkin carving contests with prizes.
