- John Hancock and Charles Thompson were the only two people to sign the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. The majority of the signatures were added on August 2nd. The last signature was added 5 years later.

- July is national hot dog month. Every July 4th Nathan's holds a hot dog eating contest in Coney Island New York. In 2003 Takeru Kobayashi ate 44 and ? hot dogs in 12 minutes to win the contest.
- July 4th wasn't declared a national holiday until 1941.
- The Iron Horse Lou Gehrig retired from the New York Yankees and gave his famous 'I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth' speech to over 61,000 fans in Yankee Stadium. His uniform number 4 is the first to be officially retired.
