Thanksgiving Table

Setting the table for thanksgiving isn't as complicated as it may seem if you take some time to plan it out before hand. First figure out how many guests are coming. If you have a lot of small children you may want to consider using a children's table for the little ones. The person who is doing the majority of the cooking should be seated at the seat closest to the kitchen door. The next most important seat is for the male host of the party who should be seated at the head of the table. If children are seated at the main table they should be seated next to their parents. Traditionally it was seating was alternating males and females but this is no longer a requirement.

The main table should have a tablecloth both for decoration and to protect the table. For more formal dinners adding a table runner will add a level of sophistication to the event. A dinner plate should be placed at each seat. If soup is being served a soup bowl can be placed on top of the dinner plate. To the left of the dinner plate the dinner fork (longer fork) should be closest to the plate. Moving outward, place the salad fork and then the napkin. The salad plate should be placed above the two forks and on a left diagonal to the dinner plate. A butter knife should placed next to the dinner plate on the right hand side. If soup is being served a soup spoon comes next followed by a dessert spoon. The bread plate is above the knife and spoon and on a right hand diagonal to the dinner plate.
